Ving Kiatoukaysy Lor was born on May 7th, 1969, in Sam Neua, Houa Phanh Province of Laos. He was the oldest son of Yong Toua Kiatoukaysy Lor and Tong Xaiyasang Ly. On May 5th, 1975, when Ving was only 6 years old, his family left Laos due to the Vietnam War, and sought refuge in Ban Vinai Refugee camp in Thailand. In July, 1978, the family arrived in Dallas, Texas where they stayed for a little over a month before relocating to Denver, Colorado, where he lived for most of his life. He also lived in Appleton, Wisconsin briefly from 2000 to 2003. In the spring of 2016, he moved to St. Paul, Minnesota.
Ving started 3rd grade in the United States. He was an exceptional student, obtaining mostly A's in school. By the time he was in 6th grade, he was voted “Most Athletic” and given the honor of carrying the US flag to kick off the school's field day events. Throughout secondary school, he received many academic awards. In 1988, Ving graduated from Westminster High School with honors, ranking number 6 in his class of over 300 students. After graduating, Ving attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, majoring in Aerospace Engineering.
As a teenager, Ving not only excelled in academics but at everything else that he puts his mind to. He was extremely gifted, and was the best in sports and the best in music. During the late 80's and 90's Ving quickly became noticeable in sporting events in Colorado and across the Midwest. In soccer competitions, he was known for his great ball handling skills and leadership on the soccer field. Ving's other great passion was music. His self-taught guitar style was admired by many of his peers during the era. As a multi-talented musician, Ving also played bass guitar, drums and was the lead singer on many of the songs his band performed. He could talk up a storm and always stood out in a crowd. He was often described as tall, dark and handsome.
Anyone who knew Ving knew of his unique philosophy and view on life. His debating skill did not go unnoticed. Even when you were confident that you were 100% sure, he could make you second guess your position. He had an amazing ability to make you see things from a different perspective; but more so, made you think of things you never thought of. He was a perfectionist and was truly the best of the best.
